We talk a lot about the benefits of HIIT. HIIT stands for high-intensity interval training. HIIT alternates between periods of intense aerobic exercise followed by periods of rest. For example, you might run at top speed for 30 seconds followed by a 30 second rest, and then repeat this throughout the duration of your workout. This type of exercise shortens your workout and helps you burn more calories.
HIIT may help you reach your fitness goals faster than traditional aerobic exercise because it increases your calorie-burning capacity, even after you’re done working out. The American College of Sports Medicine says you burn 6 to 15 percent more calories those two hours following HIIT. In addition to helping you burn more calories for weight loss, HIIT also helps you lose abdominal fat while retaining muscle mass, improves aerobic and anaerobic fitness and is good for heart health.
Another Reason to Try HIIT
Unlike moderate exercise, HIIT recruits type 1 and 2 muscle fibers, which builds better muscle. Muscle burns more calories through the day. And intervals ensure that you never get too good at an exercise. If all you do is run at a 10-minute per mile pace, your body quickly becomes efficient, so instead of 100 calories a mile, you might only burn 85.
