The holiday season is a dieter’s nightmare. No one wants to miss out on plates of sweet potato casserole, turkey stuffing and the works, top it off with grandma’s apple pie.
The article referenced above states that you can still lose weight and eat what you want. As we all know that in order to lose weight it is about calories in and calories out, thereby we utilize the calorie restricted dietary protocol. Although the 28 day weight loss program that I put together is designed to alternate calorie consumption levels, the alternate fasting holiday takes this concept a bit further.
The article gives a little science behind what happens when you fast; she indicates that your body goes through a number of cellular changes-all of which has an effect on weight loss. The most interesting cellular change is with the hormones insulin, norepinephrine and human growth hormone (HGH) when fasting. HGH increases. HGH helps keep lean muscle, insulin sensitivity improves and insulin levels decrease. It is also noted that short term fasting increases norepinephrine (the fat burning hormone), resulting in a faster metabolism. This is good news for in a long term calorie restrictive dietary program the outcome is a more sluggish metabolism.
The Breakdown: I – like most, cringe at the idea of fasting for more than a day or two! In this program you alternate feed days with fasting days, this as I stated earlier takes my “Feed and Smoothie Days’” concept a bit further.
Feed Days: On feed days you can eat whatever you want from 8:00 am until 8:00 pm. You will not eat again until noon the following day (fasting day). At this point you are well into your fasting state.
Fasting Days: On the fasting days you can eat a maximum of 500 calories between the hours of 12:00 pm until 2:00 pm. After that you will fast again until 8:00 am the next day (feed day).
Note: Even though the simple rules say that you can eat whatever you want on feed days, the smart choice would be to pick healthy clean food choices and stay within a normal calorie range for your personal needs.
